Stepping in through the doors of this unpretentious yet refined coastal home, one takes a deep breath and feel the hustle and bustle of the outside world slip away. From an elegant foyer, a set of stairs is bathed in light from large windows. To the left, a long living and dining space offers expansive views of a stunning, sun-soaked bay. The interiors do not set out to compete with the view but to complement it. The team at EB Interiors achieved this by embracing a subtle palette of muted tones and classic patterns. These are enlivened by tasteful modern elements which give the house character and style.
A modest exterior belies the house’s sophisticated interiors, which are defined by clean lines and a pleasing sense of lightness emphasised by the walls decked in natural white. The original construction was stark and very structured – a look that did not suit the taste of its new owners. A family of five, they were hoping for something with a lot more character and warmth, yet equally, they did not want something that was very ‘showy’ either. The concept direction was to steer away from an overly designed aesthetic and to instead embrace the understated, the classic and the timeless. As many renovations do, the scope of this project expanded over time, beginning with just the living spaces but then evolving to encompass the entirety of the home.
The blue waters of the bay are visible not only from the main living and dining areas but the master bedroom as well. EB Interiors wanted to reflect the serenity of the home’s coastal outlook in the style, selecting practical and durable materials that would last the test of time and opting for simple but quality finishes and furnishings. These include a bespoke dining table made with American oak finished in a raw matte and a Kashi art silk rug in duck egg by Boyd Blue. A gentle glow emanates from an Openwork light from Laura Kincade which is flush mounted and circled by hand rubbed antique brass. The fireplace and porch are framed by grey limestone.
Unpretentious yet effortlessly elegant, Lumb House by EB Interiors embodies ease and comfort. It is clear that for this family, it was not about creating a showcase but a private, welcoming space for family and friends – a home for all seasons.
